Zanthorrea Nursery Specialises In Australian Plants
Australian native plants are well known for their unique beauty. Long neglected as garden plants in Western Australia, they have had a recent surge in popularity as water-wise alternatives to traditional garden plants. Plant breeders, both in Australia and overseas are developing cultivars and hybrids with wide appeal. As well as looking spectacular in the contemporary or bush garden, our local flora is highly attractive to birds and other native animals.
All the plants we grow on site are potted on by hand and our nursery meets Both NIASA (Nursery Industry Accreditation Scheme Australia) and SGA (Sustainable Gardening Australia) standards.
PLANT OF THE MONTH
Eucalyptus spathulata - Swamp Mallet
One of the most versatile and attractive, small-medium trees you’ll find, and it’s a Western Australian local! A fast-growing mallet with a beautiful smooth, coppery-bronze trunk and fine blue-green foliage which creates an excellent, dense shade canopy. It produces clusters of creamy yellow flowers in summer and autumn which attract nectar feeding birds and insects. The Swamp Mallet will withstand almost any soil conditions from poorly drained and seasonally waterlogged clay to free draining, dry sand. It is tolerant is salty conditions and alkaline soil making it a great choice for coastal gardens and saline properties. This adaptable tree will grow in full sun or shady conditions and is tolerant of both drought and frost. Great for use as a wind break or tall screening, or as a stunning, feature tree that offers welcoming shade.

Interesting note – A mallet is a type of growth habit that relates specifically to this type of Western Australian tree. It is characterised by a single, clean trunk at the base and a neat canopy of branches that grow up and out, creating an upside-down cone shape. Mallets do not have a lignotuber, which means that they cannot resprout from the base if damaged or burned, like a mallee can. They are great in gardens because they naturally grow into a tidy, compact shape with almost no pruning and give a shady canopy up in the air, while leaving the ground clear and open.
